PuTTY is a free and open-source terminal emulator, serial console, and network file transfer application primarily used on Windows to establish secure remote connections using protocols like SSH, Telnet, rlogin, and raw socket. Lightweight and easy to use, PuTTY is widely employed by system administrators and developers to manage servers, particularly Linux-based systems, from a Windows environment. It allows users to securely access command-line interfaces on remote machines and can also generate SSH keys for authentication. Although designed for Windows, PuTTY can be used on Linux systems as well, either natively through available packages or via alternatives like Plink or KiTTY, its enhanced fork.
