A complete guide to regaining access to your own Windows PC when you're locked out
Getting locked out of your own computer because you've forgotten your Windows
password is a frustrating but surprisingly common problem. The good news is that
Windows offers several legitimate ways to regain access to a local account without
losing your files. This guide walks through the main approaches, from the simplest
built-in options to more advanced recovery tools, along with tips on how to avoid
getting locked out again in the future.
Before You Start
A few things are worth checking before diving into a password reset:
- Caps Lock and keyboard layout: Double-check that Caps Lock isn't on and that your keyboard layout matches the one used when you set the password.
- Try every password you can remember: Windows doesn't lock you out permanently after a few failed attempts on a local account, so it's worth trying variations before moving to a reset.
- Determine your account type: The steps differ depending on whether you sign in with a Microsoft account (an email address) or a local account (just a username, no email).
- Have a backup plan for your files: Most reset methods described here don't touch your personal files, but it's always wise to have a recent backup before making system-level changes.
Method 1: Reset a Microsoft Account Password Online
If you sign into your PC using a Microsoft account (an email address rather than a
plain username), you don't need any special tools. You can reset the password from
any other device with internet access.
- On another computer or phone, go to Microsoft's account recovery page.
- Choose the option indicating you've forgotten your password.
- Enter the email address associated with your Microsoft account.
- Verify your identity using a recovery email, phone number, or authenticator app.
- Set a new password.
- Return to your locked PC, sign in with the new password, and it should also update the local sign-in.
This is by far the simplest method when it applies, since it doesn't require any
installation media or third-party software.
Method 2: Use a Password Reset Disk (If You Made One)
Windows allows users to create a password reset disk in advance, typically on a USB
flash drive, specifically for situations like this. If you created one before losing
access to your account, using it is straightforward:
- On the sign-in screen, enter any incorrect password to trigger the "Reset password" link, or click it directly if visible.
- Insert the USB drive you created earlier.
- Follow the Password Reset Wizard, which will let you set a brand-new password.
- Sign in using the new password.
Unfortunately, this only works if you set up the reset disk beforehand, so it's a
good idea to create one now if you haven't, in case you ever need it.
Method 3: Reset the Password From an Existing Administrator Account
If your PC has more than one user account and you still have access to one with
administrator privileges, you can reset the forgotten password directly through
Windows settings.
- Sign in with the administrator account.
- Open Settings, then go to Accounts, and select Family & other users (the exact wording varies by Windows version).
- Click on the locked-out account and choose the option to change or reset its password.
- Set a new password and confirm.
- Sign out and log back in to the previously locked account using the new credentials.
Alternatively, the built-in Computer Management tool (accessible by right-clicking
the Start button and selecting Computer Management, then navigating to Local Users
and Groups) also allows an administrator to reset another local account's password.
Method 4: Use Windows Installation Media to Access a Recovery Command Prompt
If you don't have another administrator account and no password reset disk, you can
still regain access using a Windows installation USB drive or DVD. This method uses
Windows' built-in repair environment to reach a command prompt before the operating
system fully loads.
Step 1: Prepare Installation Media
Using another working computer, download the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft's
website and use it to create a bootable Windows installation USB drive.
Step 2: Boot From the USB Drive
Insert the USB drive into the locked computer and restart it. You may need to enter
the BIOS or UEFI boot menu (often by pressing a key such as F2, F12, Esc, or Del
during startup) to select the USB drive as the boot device.
Step 3: Open the Command Prompt
When the Windows Setup screen appears, click "Next," then select "Repair your
computer" in the lower-left corner. From the Choose an option screen, go to
Troubleshoot, then Advanced options, then Command Prompt. This opens a command-line
window with system-level access before Windows has fully started.
Step 4: Enable the Utility Manager Trick
This technique takes advantage of the fact that certain accessibility tools, such as
Sticky Keys, can be launched directly from the sign-in screen without logging in
first, and that Windows lets you substitute which program actually runs when that
tool is triggered. In the command prompt, first navigate to the Windows system
directory (usually the System32 folder on your main drive) and make a backup copy of
the Sticky Keys executable, then replace it with a copy of the command prompt
executable itself. Once this substitution is in place, restart the computer normally.
Step 5: Trigger the Command Prompt From the Lock Screen
After the PC restarts and reaches the normal sign-in screen, press the Shift key
five times in a row. Because of the substitution made in the previous step, this
will open a command prompt window with system-level privileges instead of the
Sticky Keys dialog.
Step 6: List Accounts and Reset the Password
In this command prompt, type net user and press Enter to see a list of
all local accounts on the machine. Identify the username of the account you're
locked out of, then use the following command, replacing the placeholders with your
actual username and desired password:
net user [username] [newpassword]
Press Enter to apply the change. You should see a confirmation that the command
completed successfully.
Step 7: Sign In and Restore the Original File
Close the command prompt and sign in using your username and the new password you
just set. Once you're back in, it's important to undo the substitution made earlier:
boot back into the recovery command prompt (or use the same repair environment) and
restore the original Sticky Keys executable from the backup copy you made, so that
the accessibility feature continues to work normally and the system is returned to
its default state.
Method 5: Use a Third-Party Password Recovery Tool
Several free and open-source toolkits (like lazesoft) are built specifically for resetting Windows
passwords and can be more user-friendly than manually working through the command
prompt. Utilities such as Offline NT Password & Registry Editor and various
bootable rescue toolkits bundle similar functionality into a guided, menu-driven
interface. The general process usually involves:
- Downloading the tool's ISO file on another working computer.
- Writing the ISO to a USB drive using a tool such as Rufus.
- Booting the locked PC from that USB drive.
- Following the on-screen prompts to select the Windows installation, choose the correct user account, and clear or reset its password.
- Rebooting into Windows and signing in, either with no password or the newly set one, depending on the tool.
These tools work by directly editing the Windows registry files that store account
information, so they should be used carefully and only on a device you own or have
explicit permission to access.
Which Method Should You Use?
- If you sign in with a Microsoft account, try the online account recovery method first.
- If you created a password reset disk in advance, that's the fastest option.
- If another administrator account exists on the PC, resetting the password through Windows settings is the simplest built-in approach.
- If none of the above apply, installation media combined with either the accessibility-tool trick or a dedicated recovery toolkit will get you back in.
Preventing This in the Future
- Create a password reset disk as soon as you set up a new local account.
- Use a password manager to store and autofill your Windows password securely.
- Set up a PIN or Windows Hello (fingerprint or facial recognition) as an alternative sign-in method, since these are tied to the specific device and are often easier to remember or use than a full password.
- Keep a second administrator account on shared or important machines so you always have a fallback way in.
- Link a Microsoft account to your PC when possible, since it enables straightforward online password recovery.
A Note on Responsible Use
These methods are intended for regaining access to a computer you own or are
explicitly authorized to manage, such as a family member's PC you've been asked to
help with, or a work machine where you have IT authorization. Using these techniques
to access a device without the owner's permission is illegal in most jurisdictions.
If you're locked out of a work or school computer, it's usually best to contact your
IT department first, since many organizations have their own recovery procedures and
may flag unauthorized password changes as a security incident.
Conclusion
Being locked out of your own Windows PC is stressful, but it's rarely a
permanent problem. Between Microsoft's online account recovery, built-in Windows
tools, and bootable recovery utilities, there's almost always a legitimate path back
into your account without needing to reinstall Windows or lose your files. Taking a
few minutes now to set up a password reset disk, a PIN, or a secondary administrator
account can save a lot of hassle if you ever find yourself locked out again.
